PROFILE OF COLLEGE

Panvel is a place of Tahesil, having unparallel and untapped resources, situated 40 Km. away from economic capital of India, Mumbai. It is surrounded by plethora of villages having a demographic setup dominated by other backward, backward and tribal population, unaware of metamorphosing impact of education. As a result, economic and social development remained a mirage. The horizons of updated knowledge and information which posed innumerable dilemmas in front of people on account of violent waves of urbanisation on one side and industrialisation on the other. This area experienced drastic transformation on account of establishment of CIDCO, MIDC and other public undertakings like HOC, JNPT, HIL, ONGC, Bharat Electronics and private industries as well as multinationals like Reliance, Cipla,Merck, Indal etc. and now SEZ become the term for threat to the existance of many people. This epoch created necessity of education as the pioneer weapon of salvation in the process of dispelling ignorance and achieving incredible success in all walks of life. 

Hon. Shri. Ramsheth Thakur, a former Member of Parliament, benevolent leader and committed social worker understood that there is a necessity of establishing full-fledged educational institution as panacea to attain all-round development of people.He along with his dedicated and determined stalwarts established the "JANARDAN BHAGAT SHIKSHAN PRASARAK SANSTHA" in the memory of Late Shri. Janardan Bhagat Saheb in 1991. The vision envisaged by Late Shri. Janardan Bhagat, a philanthropic social reformer to provide quality education to the disadvantaged and project affected people, become reality.

The Sanstha made a crucial decision of ushering in the arena of higher education by establishing CHANGU KANA THAKUR ARTS, COMMERCE AND SCIENCE COLLEGE, NEW PANVEL in the memory of Late Shri. Changu Kana Thakur Saheb in the academic year 1997-1998. The college has commenced its activities with merely 167 students. The college has committed itself to provide quality education to all strata and become center of excellence in the process of facilitating effective teaching and learning. The college has grown with leaps and bounds by creating niche of accomplishment in the new millennium in the realm of higher education.

The college is located in Khanda Colony, New Panvel (W) a node developed by CIDCO, known as a creator of city of 21st century. The location of the college is easily accessible by road as well as by rail. We, in C.K.Thakur College are relentlessly striving in the pursuance of academic excellence and encourage the students to participate spontaneously in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. This conducive ambience fosters creativity, integrity, fortitude and leadership qualities among the students for development of versatile personality.

Initially, our college commenced with degree courses in Arts, Commerce and Science disciplines but the advent of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation revamped paradigms of educational institutions and the dichotomy between industries and academia become visible. Therefore, the vogue of professional speciality courses emerged in the educational scenario to equip young minds with managerial and technical skills and get job opportunities. Eye flickering changes are being taking place in educational system and we as an active constituent of the system accepted the challenge of change, however gradual it may be. We wear a new look-techno-survey, modern, progressive but solidly grounded in its tradition of excellence.

The college is one of the few pioneering institutions to commence speciality academic programmes introduced by the University of Mumbai commensurate with needs of twenty first century. The college offers, along with three year integrated degree courses in B.A., B.Com. and B.Sc. in traditional subjects,

the speciality courses having skill oriented base like Bachelor of Management Studies (B.M.S.), Bachelor ofCommerce in Accounting and Finance (B.Com. A&F), Bachelor of Science (Computer Science), Bachelor ofScience (Biotechnology). To develop the knowledge of students on focused area, we have certificate as wellas diploma courses at under graduate as well as postgraduate levels like Voice Culture, Business EnglishSkills, Conversational English, Verbal Communication, Accountancy, Environmental Biochemistry,Microbiology, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics and Post Graduate Diploma in Medical LaboratoryTechnology (P.G.D.M.L.T.). We are the accredited Center of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for C.P.T. and Center of Institute of Distance Education, University of Mumbai. We are the post graduate center of University of Mumbai for M.Sc. (Organic Chemistry), M.Sc. (Organic Chemistry - By Research),M.Sc.(Biotechnology), M.Sc. (Computer Science) M.Sc. (Microbiology), M.Com. (Advanced Accountancy)and M.Phil. in Commerce. The college is also the recognised centre of University of Mumbai for Ph.D. in Accountancy.

Our college is emblem of excellent infrastructural facilities, which create conducive environment for overall development of students. We are persistently trying to kindle young minds with lofty ideas; accountability virtuousness, uprighteousness, curiosity and moral, social as well as ethical codes. With applications of knowledge and inculcation of values, the students are empowered with the skill of converting challenges into opportunities.

We have progressive policies to accomplish our mission and goals through spontaneous participation from all constituents to pave way for unique development. We have diligently and perpetually practiced utilitarianism of determination, dedication and discipline as key to dazzling success in academic, extra-curricular and co-curricular activities.

Our members of the staff are highly dedicated having indomitable commitment towards achievements of mission and goals. They are honored with incentives in order to maintain high morale and sense of spirit while performing their duties based on the parameters of excellence.

As far as facilities are concerned, all possible, help and encouragement is extended to those who areaspiring for research project. As a result, our college strikes superb balance between teaching, learning and research commitments. We consider teaching, learning and evaluation as an integral part of educational system, which require adherence of certain policies, parameters, framework and schedules. We have envisaged innovative methods of teaching, learning and evaluation in such a skillful and judicious manner which created integrated and fruitful ambience in our campus. We are attempting to move away from the teacher dominated model of teaching learning to a student-centered model, where the responsibility of learning is shared by teachers and learners. We act as facilitators and provide the much needed encouragement and support to the students, helping them to realise their potential and to achieve their goal. Resultantly, we enshrined six merit holders at University level who brought laurels and prestige. This gigantic stride of success in the academic realm symbolises consistent perseverance, passion for knowledge and shine like  phoenix on the part of students and teachers. Our students are also on forefront in cultural, sports activities at University, State as well as National levels.

The college has created social awareness and sense of accountability towards the society. We are actively organizing, extension activities with students participation. By taking into consideration, unique and constructive social contributions of N.S.S. volunteers, the University of Mumbai acknowledged our work by bestowing on us coveted "BEST N.S.S. UNIT 2003-2004" and four "BEST N.S.S. VOLUNTEER" awards of University of Mumbai

 With the view to challenge untapped potentialities of our students, we established healthy and interactive linkages with prominent industries, associations and NGOs for enhancing practical knowledge and business environment. The time has changed; the future has already arrived like eternal movement of the chariot towards path of enlightenment and development. The advents of foreign universities have posed severe challenges in terms of methods of teaching, learning and evaluation in front of all constituents of educational system.

As we are young, full of zeal and ambitions, we are marching towards heights of excellence in the process of imbibing education among virulent minds. We have skillfully formulated long term as well as short-term plans for academic, curricular, co-curricular, extra-curricular and extension activities in accordance with the tents of holistic development of students.

Taking in to account, our academic, infrastructure, co-curricular, extra-curricular activities and other allround development, NAAC, an autonomous body of University Grants Commission accredited us with a prestigious 'A' grade, in May 2006 and University of Mumbai conferred us with a prestigious ‘Best College Award’ in January 2008.

We are permanently affiliated to the University of Mumbai and recognized by UGC under 2 (f) and 12 (B).
