Mission
To inspire students to study Botany with a conviction that plants of every kind are vital to our environment and survival.
 
Goals and Objectives
• To educate students about the fundamental concepts in Botany.
• To expose the students to the exciting new areas of applied Plant Sciences like Forestry, Horticulture, Ayurvedic Botany and Plant Biotechnology.
• To instill among the students a genuine sense of love and respect towards nature, which would make possible a harmonious existence as a component of the biosphere.

Departmental activities :
The department seeks to provide students with an opportunity to participate in various extra-curricular academic activities such as -
Projects under taken by department :
20 students participated in research / survey projects during the Christmas vacation (from 25th to 30th December 2003). The projects were as follows -
    • Estimation of Ca+2 and Mg+2 contents in rice samples.
    • Estimation of Vitamin-C from various fruits.     • Estimation of soil moisture content from different soil samples.
    • Isolation and morphological study of keratinolytic fungi from human hair.
30 students participated in survey projects during Christmas vacation (25th to 30th December 2004).The projects were as follows -
    • Estimation of sugars from fruits.
    • Estimation of proteins from pulses, eggs, milk and meat.
Study tours -
Department of Botany conducts study tours to places of botanical interest such as Alibag beach for study of algae, Kankeshwar - for study of angiospermic species in forest area. Murud Jangira fort, Goa, Maharashtra Nature Park etc. These excursions help the students to study plants in their natural habitat and observe their relationships with other components of their ecosystems.
Visits to educative centers -
The department conducted visits to Goa Science Center as well as National Institute of Oceanography to enable the students to observe and study the methods of research and various other programmes conducted at these places. Such visits help in inspiring students to take up research by generating scientific temper.
Competitions conducted by the department -
The department encourages students to come up with innovative ideas by holding competitions like poster making and model making, in collaboration with science association, with a view to motivate them to do independent referencing in the library and exhibit their creativity. Quiz competitions conducted by the department encourage the students to read more and not limit themselves only to the syllabus.
Future plans :
• To expand the existing botanical garden so as to include a wider variety of plants.
• To develop the department upto the third year level.
