Vision
Attaining new heights in biotechnology teaching and research, shaping biotechnology into a premier precision tool of the future for creation of wealth and ensuring social justice, specially for the welfare of the poor.
 
Mission
• Realising biotechnology as one of the greatest intellectual enterprises of humankind, to provide the impetus that fulfills this potential of understanding life processes and utilising them to the advantage of humanity.
• Scientific and technological empowerment of India’s incomparable human resource.
• Creation of a strong infrastructure both for research and commercialisation.
 
Goals and Objectives
• To provide to the University, state agencies and the private sector, high quality students in the field of biotechnology.
• To offer workshops, short courses, classes and other educational opportunities as appropriate to maximise access and effective use of the subject.
• To facilitate interdisciplinary activities which utilise biotechnology.
• To develop scientific attitude and sense of observation among the students.

Departmental activities :
Organisation of competitions :
  • Department organise different competitions like quiz and model preparation for the students.
Guest lectures :
  • Special guest lectures were arranged by the department to update and improve the knowledge of the students.
 
In the academic year 2003-2004 following lectures were arranged -
  • Lecture on ‘Molecular markers - Scope and application’.
  • Lecture on ’Applications, scope and advance of Biotechnology in India’.
 
Expert lecture series :
  • Under expert lecture series department organised a lecture of Prof. S. N. Jogdand, Department of Microbiology, Modern College, Vashi, Navi Mumbai, on ‘Industrial Biotechnology’ on 26th February 2005.
 
Organisation of seminar :
  • National seminar on ‘Biotechnology and Bioinformatics’ was organised on 26th and 27th November 2005 by the department in collaboration with Departments of Botany, Microbiology and Zoology.
 
Educational / industrial tours / visits :
  Academic year 2003-2004 -
  • Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.
  • National Institute of Oceanography, Goa where students got knowledge of various research projects running in the institute.
  • Science Centre, Goa.
  • A team of 10 students visited In Vitro Fertilization (I.V.F.) Center, Panvel where students were introduced with methods of In Vitro Fertilization.
   
  Academic year 2004-2005 -
  • An industrial tour was arranged to Burn Phlp India Ltd., Uran on 6th December 2004 for T.Y.B.Sc. students to make them familiar with the commercial production of yeast on large scale, using fermenters.
  • An educational visit of T.Y.B.Sc. students was arranged to Advanced Center of Research, Education and Treatment, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai on 16th December 2004.
  • An educational visit of T.Y.B.Sc. students was arranged to Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai on 16th February 2005 for the demonstration of virus inoculation technique in egg.
 
Industrial training :
  • An industrial training was arranged for the students in Elder Pharmaceuticals, Mumbai.

  • Microflora of soil water and air in and around Panvel.
  • Estimation of casein in milk.
  Academic year 2004-2005 -
  • Estimation of lycopene content in different indian tomato varieties and in tomato based food products available in local market.
  • Estimation of carbohydrate, protein and cellulose content of different brand fodder samples.
  • Survey for malaria status in New Panvel.
 
Fulure plans :
  • To get funding from national funding agencies for various research projects.
  • To provide to the university, state agencies, and the private sector, high quality students in the field of Biotechnology.
  • To do collaborative work with private sectors and research organisations working in the field of Biotechnology.
  • To start well equipped research centre in Biotechnology.
