Students profile (Academic) -
• The students who join at the F.Y.B.Com. level are basically from vernacular medium and not upto the mark in the communication skills, a continuous effort is made in the classroom and outside to motivate the students to overcome this drawback and improve their personality. The activities conducted by the commerce association goes a long way in improving the confidence of the students.
• Many of the students are from financially weak background and most of them are aspiring first time graduates in the family, so a sincere effort is made not to drive away the students from the classroom but to make the atmosphere student friendly.
• The students are motivated and encouraged to pursue their studies even after graduation.

The department has completed two projects with students
• Banking - Scheduled banks.
• C.I.D.C.O., Creater of Navi Mumbai and Development of New Panvel node.
 
Activities of commerce association :
The commerce association of our college exists from the year 1997-1998 onwards and is responsible in shaping and moulding the overall personality of our students. It conducts various activities and competitions like quiz, debate, elocution, Ad-marketing, Ad-mad show, group discussion etc. It organises a one day workshop titled ‘Smart living’ and invites experts to talk on topic like stress management, memory management, event management etc. It also arranges a picnic annually, industrial visits are also arranged for the students.
 
Organisation of workshops / seminars :
• Seminars, workshops and paper presentations on relevant topics takes place in the academic year.
• A one day workshop on ‘Smart living’ was organised for the students on the following topics on 16th December 2003. -"Event management", By Mrs. Rama Iyer, Motilal Jhunjhunwala College, Vashi -"Memory and stress management", By Mr. E.V. Swaminathan Father Agnel Engineering College, Vashi.
• One day workshop on modified syllabus in accountancy for T.Y.B.Com. - Another major event for the Department of Commerce was a one day workshop on modified syllabus in accountancy for T.Y.B.Com., jointly organised by the Board of Studies in Accountancy, University of Mumbai and our college on 28th July 2002 for the teaching faculties in Accountancy of the colleges in Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg districts to communicate the revised syllabus and elicit their valuable suggestions for future improvements. The programme was inaugurated by our Chairman, Hon. Shri. Ramsheth Thakur and was graced by many eminent professors of University of Mumbai. Dr. M. G. Shirha?i, Principal, Lala Lajpat Rai College, Mumbai and Dean, Faculty of Commerce, University of Mumbai was the guest of honour. About 100 teachers a?ended the workshop. There were four technical sessions; experts in the relevant papers head each session.
 
Other highlights :
• Students from the department are sponsored by the college and sent for workshops to other colleges.
• The commerce association brings out ‘Commerce Herald’ in which a summary of activities and articles by the students are published.
• We have entered into a memorandum of understanding (M.o.U.) with Navi Mumbai Institute of Logistic Management (N.M.I.L.M.), Vashi to start certificate and diploma courses in our college in collaboration with them. Emerging areas like warehousing, transportation, logistic management are to be tapped for the benefit of the students.
• We have interactions with banks and other companies to organised their valuable lectures and guidance about placement opportunities.
• Teaching in the classroom is through traditional lecture method and also with modern techniques like O.H.P., L.C.D. presentation etc.
• Students are motivated to take up the projects of relevant topics and present a report. This helps in overall development of the students.
• Every year an expert lecture series is conducted for the T.Y.B.Com. students in which experts from various colleges are invited to guide our students on various topics concerned with their university examination.
• Every year a Parent-teacher meeting is organised for T.Y.B.Com. students to have an interaction between parents, teachers and students with a view to improving the performance and confidence of the students.
• The members of the Department of Commerce are active members of various committees at college level.
• New courses started in the department include B.Com. (Accounting and Finance). The college is an accredited center for P.E.-I and we are proud to march ahead by opening the P.G. center for M.Com. in such a short span of time.
 
Future plans of department :
• To establish research centre at college in the area of commerce and accountancy.
• To commence more speciality and self-financing programmes in the area of commerce and accountancy.
• To commence value added vocational certificate and diploma courses in the area of commerce and accountancy.

  • Under his chairmanship of Board of studies in Accountancy, University of Mumbai launched a speciality self-financing degree programme – B.Com. (Accounting and Finance) as well as four add-on certificate courses in the field of accountancy and revised the syllabus all subjects falling under purview of Board of studies in Accountancy from F.Y.B.Com. to M.Com. level.
